Location is a too often ignored information attribute. Without requiring a specialized GIS application Oracle Locator, a feature of Oracle 10g (both Standard and Enterprise editions), provides the core functionality needed by most users. Locator simply provides a new datatype - SDO_GEOMETRY - to regular Oracle database tables. With this new attribute any database record can be associated with a geographic location. Imagine being able to automatically locate files based on location! Open a contract document and automatically find all other contracts for similar properties within 20 miles.
Geocoding is simply the association of a well-known address with a geographic location: a postal address; a block and lot number; a zip code; a town, county, or state; a census block, a feature name. In each case these can be associated with a univeral geographic location; a latitude and longitude. Many documents contain address references. The CMSDK Group leverages technologies designed to discover addresses and other geocodable text references in a variety of document types. Thus the majority of locatable documents can be automatically associated to location attributes. A document may have multiple address references and each location can be tagged according to a pre-determined scheme. As an example, documents can be located by "From:", "To:", and "Reference:" locations.
Geospatial coding is a more complex spatial reference methodology, but it is appropriate in some applications, particularly if a Geographic Information System (GIS) is availble. Geospatial referencing requires that a location be associated with a GIS feature. This might be a point or a complex linear or area entity. A GIS is a specialized database that encodes map data in a highly intellegent form suitable for analysis by planners, engineers, and other land use experts. Many large organizations, particular in the government, utility, and transportation markets support such special purpose GIS applications. The CMSDK Group can closely integrate your content management solution with your GIS.
